Description

This video explains that leafcutter ants don't directly eat the leaves they harvest. Instead, they feed this vegetation to specialised species of fungi, which is in turn eaten by the ants larvae. Neither the ants nor the fungi can survive without the other, making this an obligatory symbiotic relationship with the ants. The ants also actively remove waste and pests (such as competing fungi species) from the underground farming chambers, making this a rare case of actively managed agriculture in nature. #ants #science #sciencefacts #biology #ecology #fungus
